BREAKING NEWS: RANGERS GET JOKINEN FROM FLAMES!

Update 4: Deal is done!!!  Huge win for the Rangers!! =(

Update 3: According to Jim Cerny’s twitter account the Flames might be seeking Ryan Callahan as part of the deal.  You can view it here:

 http://twitter.com/JimCerny/status/8517364222

Also according to TSN’s Darren Dregger Flames GM Daryl Sutter may have gotten cold feet when it comes to this deal.  Meaning he probably woke up and saw what an awful trade it was.  This should be interesting to keep an eye on as the hours roll by.

Update 2: According to tsn.ca the deal hasn’t been fully agreed to and likely won’t be throughout the course of the day.  Look for an agreement if there is one after the Flames game tonight.

Update: According to tsn’s Darren Dregger the details haven’t been finalized but they are pretty close.

Rangers get:
Jokinen
Prust

Flames get:
Kotalik
Higgins

IMO Win for the Rangers

According to yahoos puckdaddy the Rangers have traded Chris Higgins and Ales Kotalik to the Flames for Olli Jokinen.  Jokinen is a free agent after this season but I think they did well in the deal as much as it pains me to say!  Kotalik was a 3 million per year bust and Higgins wasn’t producing as well as he had in years past.

Post Game: Isles lose 2-0!

Well evidently this team forgot how to win!!  Am I the only one who has thought the last week and change has been frustrating as anything to watch.  I swear that I have never seen a team miss the net as much as we have!  Anyway today we lost again this time to the Panthers 2-0.  Here are some of my notes:

-Vokoun played well!
-Where were we in the second period???  As decent as the first period was that is how bad the second was
-We can’t keep losing to teams that are right next to us in the standings and expect to get into the playoffs
-Refs were terrible but as usual they weren’t that good!

If you have anything to add post it in comments

Next Game: Thursday @ TB

Pre Game: Isles @ Florida!

Today Kyle Okposo and our New York Islanders will be traveling to Florida to take on David Booth and the Panthers.  According to Florida news outlets David Booth will be making his long awaited return today.  Booth hasn’t played since taking a vicious hit from Mike Richards on October 24th of last year.  Expect to see DP in net today as we go for a much needed win!

BREAKING NEWS: Dion Phaneuf traded!!

According to yahoos puck-daddy the Leafs have done a major team shakeup.  First they have traded Nicklas Hagman, Matt Stajan, Ian White, and Jamal Mayers to Calgary for Dion Phaneuf, Fredrik Sjostrom, and Keith Aulie.  Also the leafs have traded Vesa Toskala and Jason Blake to the Ducks for goalie JS Giguere.  Well this is a major facelift for Toronto as they have traded a ton of big offensive pieces so we have to see if there offense can handle the loss of production of Stajan, Blake, and Hagman.  But adding Phanuef makes them alot better!

Training camp next season in China??

According to pointblank next year the Isles will be holding training camp in China from 9/13-9/23.  He says they will be in Beijing and Shanghai.  I wonder who will play exhibition games with them over there.

Mike Green suspended 3 games

According to yahoo sports Capitals d-man Mike Green has been suspended 3 games for his elbow on Michael Frolik of the Panthers last night.  This coming after Sergei Gonchar wasn’t punished for elbowing Cal Clutterbuck of the Wild a couple weeks ago.  The NHL discipline policy at its finest, I tell ya!  Here is the hit you be the judge:

I thought the suspension was fair but given their recent history maybe a tad excessive.  Hey I guess thats why I don’t work for the NHL.

Post Game: Isles lose 2-1 to the Flyers again!

Well for the 14th straight time our New York Islanders fell 2-1 to the Flyers.  Here are some of my notes from the game:

-Kerry Fraser is a bad ref.  the other guy today wasn’t bad but for the second time this yr Fraser was bad!  To many calls were missed for my liking!
-That call late on Weight was crap!  Weight put his hand on his shoulder and Carcillo sold the rest.
-There second goal was on a powerplay that shouldn’t have came about because it should have been 4-4 but surprise surprise a slashing call on Pronger was missed.  Um…I wonder why
-Nice seeing Rolosons emotion on what turned out to be the Refs giving us a break for a change on the waived off 3rd goal
-Mcd. played well!

If you have anything to add post in comments

Next Game: Tomorrow @ 4PM @ Florida

Pre Game: Isles @ Philly!

Update: According to Philly.com goalie Ray Emery will make his 7th straight start for the Flyers today.

Tomorrow our New York Islanders will be traveling to the Wachovia center to take on Mike Richards and the Flyers.  The Isles are dressing enforcer Trevor Gillies for this game so expect a roster move to get him in the lineup.  Expect Dwayne Roloson to start in net, if you want to know who is being scratched for Gillies check pointblank or newsday tomorrow.  Although we haven’t beaten the Flyers in what seems like forever we really really need this game so hopefully lightning can strike and we can get the badly needed 2 pts from this game!

Johan Hedberg makes funniest save of the year thus far!

In case you haven’t seen it here is what some are calling the funniest save of the year by Thrashers goalie Johan Hedberg in the Thrashers 4-3 win over the Flyers last night.

Should the Olympics be for amaturs only???

With the Olympics coming up I figured now would be as good a time as any to do this.  Do you think the Olympics should be for amateur players only?  Or do you enjoy having the professionals there?  I am split on this because while it is cool and fun watching the best players in the world compete against each other.  For their teams it must be nerve wrecking because of the prospect of injury.  I don’t know about you but when Okposo wasn’t selected for the Olympics sure I was disappointed for him but I was sort of happy to because knowing our luck he would’ve went there and gotten some freak injury and been out 2 months.  So I will ask again do you feel that the Olympics should be for amateur athletes only?

Latest on the Lighthouse from Kate Murray!

Yesterday the Supervisor appeared before the Garden City Chamber of Commerce.  Here is what she had to say about the Lighthouse taken from a Garden City magazine the link of which can be found on the bottom of the page:
“As for the Lighthouse proposal, the Hempstead town board is the ultimate zoning authority in the approval process.

Principles Charles Wang and Scott Rechler hope to transform the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum site and its surrounding area into a “modern 24/7 suburban center” with a revitalized arena for the New York Islanders. The project includes mixed-use residential housing, retail and entertainment venues, Class A office space, a multi-purpose athletic complex, minor league ballpark and the first 5-star hotel on Long Island.

“From the moment we received Mr. Wang’s and Mr. Rechler’s application, we were excited about the prospect of good, sane development at the coliseum HUB area,” Supervisor Murray said. ”Despite at times very intense advocacy on both sides of the issue, I think we have chartered a very steady course … I think we have taken our job as the ultimate zoning authority with regard to this project very seriously.”

In the two years the town has had the application, Murray said councilmembers have been concerned about a number of issues raised through its environmental analysis.

“The traffic issues, the water issues, the quality of life issues that surround a project of this size can’t be taken lightly,” the supervisor said. Numerous issues have been raised, including enough water and electricity to accommodate such a large project, as well as traffic congestion and how the proposed retail would affect local downtowns.

“I want to be clear, the town board has never uttered privately or publicly that they do not want to see any development at the coliseum,” Murray said. “The coliseum is really an ugly eyesore. It needs some good development. It needs some sane development. We just want to make sure that the quality of life for those residents who are surrounding the coliseum area and beyond are taken care of as well.”

Murray noted that with the change in the county legislature and administration, with Ed Mangano now at the helm, Wang and Rechler have to “do some homework.”

“They don’t have a lease in place. There was a memorandum of understanding between former county executive [Tom] Suozzi and Mr. Wang and Mr. Rechler. They have some issues that they have to deal with on the county level,” Murray noted. “On the town level, we’ll continue to do our environmental analysis to work towards a successful resolution of this issue.”

Resident John Pittoni told Murray the Lighthouse project should be scrapped. “When you go to different communities, you see stores vacant … ‘For Sale’ signs … While Uniondale may benefit [from the Lighthouse project], ever other school district and every other municipality will be adversely affected.”

Murray assured that as the town continues reviewing the Lighthouse application, these issues won’t be ignored.

“While business climate and business success for particular downtown districts like Garden City and others is not a part of the environmental analysis that we, by law, have to undertake, you can’t ignore it,” the supervisor said.

“That is always going to be part of the back drop, part of the sub-text, part of the larger issues we as town board must consider … Rest assured we are not immune to those kinds of issues. We can’t be. We would not be doing our job in a holistic manner if we were ignoring the economic signs and detriments to this project. I assure you we are,” Murray added.”

To me this is nothing we haven’t heard before including the GC Nimby not wanting this to get done.  She says they are taking it seriously when everyone knows that they just look for any little thing to delay the process.  Look at the FGEIS there were reports that they found over 200 errors with it.  Of which the Lighthouse said that they only found 19 to be worth changing as a majority of them were spelling errors.  All I have to say is they really need to get their head out of their collective politically corrupt a**e* and get this done already!!!!!

The case with Jeff Tambellini

Imagine how it feels to travel with the team and practice with the team but when it comes to game time, your sitting up in the press box.  The urge to play now is greater then ever now since the Islanders are entering the playoff push.  How can you stay positive and never put your head down.  I have not heard any stories within the past few months about Jeff bringing teammates down or having a negative attitude in the locker room.  For that alone Mr. Tambellini should be applauded.

But what should the Islanders do with Jeff.  If you put him through waivers, you almost know a team will claim him cause the guy still has some upside and potential.  When he is not scoring in regulation time, he almost certain to put one home in the shootout.  With the speed and ability he has Jeff will not clear waivers.  The Islanders know he has trade value but the question is how much?  A mid round draft pick would be my guess.  Do you risk the chance of letting Jeff go and have him score 20 goals a season with another team.

I feel bad for the guy and how could you not.  Sometimes I feel that the Islanders should just let him go.  Trade him for a draft pick and let Jeff play somewhere else where he would get the opportunity, he certainly is not getting it here.  The Isles have a lot of thinking and decisions to make and the Tambellini factor should be near the top of the list.

We have an enforcer for the time being at least!

According to pointblank and Katie Strang of newsday the Isles have signed enforcer Trevor Gillies to a contract and he will probably suit up against the Flyers on Saturday.  I don’t believe that he has any relation to Islander and NHL Hall of Famer Clark Gillies.  It should be interesting to see if he sticks past the game vs the Broad Street Buillies part 2 or if he is just here to whip some but saturday.  Either way it should be interesting!

Post Game: Isles lose 4-1!

Tonight our New York Islanders fell to the surging Carolina Hurricanes 4-1.  Here are some of my notes from the game:

  • Cam Ward played really well!
  • Nice seeing Moulson get 20 goals! (Our first 20 goal scorer since the 07-08 season)
  • DP made a nice save in pd 1 to rob Eric Staal of what would’ve been his second goal of the pd
  • The refs were less then stellar as if we aren’t used to that by now

If you have anything else post in comments

Next Game: Saturday @ Philly  FYI: It starts at 12:30 PM
