With a 3rd round pick in this years draft the Isles took center Jason Clark. He will attend college next year and projects to be a third line middle weight fighting center in the future. To me he sounds like another Jason Weimer. We’ll just have to wait and see how he develops and maybe well be seeing him in a few years.

Probably my favorite pick of the draft (sorry el nino) but Kirill has the tools to be a superstar NHL player. The NHL player he is most compared to is former Thrasher and Devil sniper Ilya Kovalchuk. Hes got good speed, sick hands, and the ability to make d-men miss. If he is able to straighten out his off the ice issues I think this could end up being one heck of a player for us.
Here are a couple youtube videos on him:

According to Chris Botta at Islanderspointblank the Islanders let Bergenheim and Tambellini become unrestricted free agents meaning they will not be with the team next year. Matt Moulson, Robbie Schremp, Dustin Kohn, Dylan Reese, and Nathan Lawson all received qualifying offers from the Islanders.
I was a fan of Tambellini but I think his time came and he needs a new start. I was suprised when I heard that Bergy was let go. Many fans including me were a fan of his energy and the excitement he brought to his game. Even so I fully understand why the Islanders would make such a move. It is not always a bad thing when you move on. I wish both of luck to these guys in the future.

On Friday night the Isles traded out of the second round to acquire the 30th pick in the first round and used it to draft this man, hulking center Brock Nelson out of high school. Brock had 95 pts in 31 games last season. He will attend college at the University of North Dakota, and it is expected he will spend at least 3 years there if go for his full degree. Some say his numbers are slanted because he was a man among boys, I say you don’t average over 3 pts a game on accident.

According to various news out lets the Flyers have been given permission to talk to goalie Evgeni Nabakov about signing a contract with them. If they are able to sign him prior to July 1st then the Flyers will give the sharks a 7th round pick next year.

Over the next few days we will examine the Islanders picks. Right now we will being with their first, first rounder fifth overall pick Nino Niederreiter.
EL Nino which is his nick name became famous after having a fantastic world juniors over the winter. Known for his ability to hit and given his size have led people to say that even at his young age he could be a servicable NHL player next year. Just for those that don’t know Nino is 17 and is the youngest player in this draft. He was 8 days away from not being eligible for this draft and being a top guy in next years draft. I think it would be best to give him another year in JR’s and then in 2011-2012 look out because EL Nino will be on the loose.

Well our Islanders sure had an interesting weekend!! First they were one of many teams that passed on the top d-men and went with Swiss power forward El Nino. Then they traded both of their second rounders to the Blackhawks in exchange for for the 30th pick and used that to select center Brock Nelson. Then in the third round they went for the gold and they selected Russian superstar Kirill Kabanov. Then they took Jason Clark 82 overall. Then they traded their 4th rounder to the Avs for a third rounder next year. Then they took d-man Tony De hart who was Calvin De Haans line mate in juniors. They then traded both of their sixth rounders to Atlanta for a 5th rounder next year. They then took a goalie in the 7th round.
Here is Isles assistant GM Ryan Jankowski on the draft:

In the 3rd round the New York Islanders select Kirill Kabanov with the 65th pick in the draft. Kirill a top talent fell all the way to the 3rd round because of the problems with his father wanting him to play in Russia. A very confusing situation but the Islanders thought it was worth it.
Honestly I love this pick! A very small risk but potentially a huge reward. To me this guy has top 10 talent and we are able to grab him in the 3rd round! Great job Garth!

Well in what turned out to be one of many surprises in the first round tonight at five our New York Islanders selected Swiss power forward Nino Niederreiter. Most places expected us to take either Erik Gudbranson or if he was there Cam Fowler.
In my opinion we reached a little here because I think if we traded to 8 or 9 we still could’ve gotten him. I thought it was the wrong move to reach here for him but what can you do?
Here is a video that shows EL Nino doing what he does best also exhibiting some offensive skill:

Here are some things I have been hearing from people currently in LA
-Andy Strickland reports Sergei Gonchar is looking for a 3 year extension at 5 million per but the Pens are offering 2.
-Katie Strang from newsday say that an 08 trade down scenario looks like a strong possibility
-tsn.ca reports that Dan Hamhuis is miles apart with the Flyers and maybe traded prior to July 1st
-Pierre Lebrun reports that the Oilers have made multiple plays for the 2nd overall pick but have been shot down each time.
If you don’t have a twitter I suggest you get one, follow and us at twitter.com/savetheisles
You will get the latest on happenings from LA there.

According to Darren Dreger from tsn.ca you can add our #5 pick to the list of pot. tradeable picks.
I wouldn’t be surprised at all if both Gudbranson and Fowler are gone if we trade down.
